After a month off fighting the flu, Sinead is back as is another episode of the podcast. Ask Science Dude : Antibiotic Resistance! In this episode Sinead looks at antibiotic resistance and the way that bacteria react to the chemicals we use on the daily to combat them after receiving a question from a listener…all this after a brief rant on Climategate.

Hey Science Dude! I can’t resist… there is another really good reason not to use antibacterial soap, particularly soap containing triclosan: a bunch of evidence has come out recently showing that triclosan builds up in the environment and can bioaccumulate in wildlife. For example, it was recently found in the blood plasma of bottlenose dolphins living off the Atlantic coast of North America (Patricia A. Fair, et al. 2009. Environmental Pollution, 157: 2248-2254). It has also been found in human breast milk (Mats Allmyr, et al. 2006. Science of The Total Environment, 372: 87-93). If triclosan doesn’t have any measurable positive effect, as your podcast points out, then let’s stop using it!
